FOURTH OF JULY SAFETY!!!!
The fourth of July is an exciting holiday. It marks our country’s independence, which is a great reason to celebrate! The day might involve getting together with family and friends for a cookout and enjoying everything there is to do outside. As the sun starts to set, the kids may ask about lighting sparklers in anticipation of the fireworks display that will soon begin. The evening comes to a close and you find yourself safely back home reflecting in commemoration, thankfulness and astonishment!
Just like any other celebration, there are a lot of precautions to take. However, the fourth of July specifically has some added areas of concern! Take a couple minutes to consider these safety tips over this holiday weekend.
FIREWORKS SAFETY
- Be sure fireworks are legal in your area before using or buying them.
- Follow all directions on the fireworks products.
- Do not create your own fireworks!
- Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
- Always have water handy. A hose is best, but a bucket of water will do.
- Never try to relight a firework that seems to have malfunctioned. Soak it in water and throw it away!
- Make sure all spectators keep a safe distance from where the fireworks are being lit.
- Consider ear protection for children.
GRILLING SAFETY
- Use your grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under branches or overhangs.
- Open your gas grill before lighting.
- Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in trays below your gas or propane grill so it cannot be ignited.
- Declare a “kid and pet-free zone” around the grill to keep them safe.
- Avoid loose clothing that can catch fire when cooking on the grill.
OUTDOOR SAFETY
- Protect yourself from the sun!
- Apply (and reapply) sunscreen.
- Wear a hat.
- Take a break and sit in the shade.
- Drink plenty of water even if you are not thirsty!
- Pack the insect repellent so you can enjoy the fireworks display.
WATER SAFETY
- Make sure swimmers are supervised, especially children.
- Avoid distractions.
- Use good judgement when swimming and boating. Water and alcohol really are not a good combination!
Most of all, we want you to have a very enjoyable fourth of July weekend!
Hosting a party can be a lot of fun, but also a big responsibility. Take the time to review your homeowners policy with your insurance professional. You may also want to consider the addition of a personal umbrella policy if you don’t already have one. Unfortunate situations do occur. We want to make sure you are protected if something happens on your personal property.
